The year is flying by, and summer is quickly approaching. Mid-spring is typically when homeowners in Connecticut and Massachusetts begin to feel the effects of the changing seasons. The temperature goes up - and with it, the humidity both inside and outside of your home. Humidity can cause a range of issues. The biggest issue? Mold and wood rot in your basement or crawl space. But what can homeowners do about it?

Humidity In Your Basement and Crawl Space

As the temperature rises, so does the humidity. This warm, humid air from outside meets the cold air in a basement, and condensation forms. The condensation turns to mold, growing on wood, drywall, and insulation. It can even grow on your personal items like furniture! This mold is what gives basements the heavy, musty air that homeowners know all too well.

In a crawl space, it can get even worse. Most homeowners never go down to their crawl space, so they may not even know they have a problem until it's too late. The humidity can cause mold growth, sagging insulation, and wood rot. The homeowner won't even know until a contractor goes into their crawl space, or they begin to feel their floors sag.

What Can You Do?

Once you have a mold and humidity problem, you need to address it before it gets worse. Lowering the relative humidity of your basement or crawl space and removing the mold are two important steps to make your home healthy and comfortable again.

SaniDry Sedona

You need to address the humidity before you can begin to heal the rest of the basement. We have the perfect solution! Our SaniDry™ Sedona dehumidifer is amazing. It removes up to 100 pints of water a day from your home. It also has a MERV 8 filter that can remove particles from the air down to 3 microns in size! That means that mold spores, dust, and other particulates are taken out of the air. It can also move over 300 cubic feet of dry air per minute. The lower relative humidity prevents mold growth. It even has automatic drainage into a sump pump, meaning you can "set it and forget it". It is a perfect addition to a humid basement or crawl space.

Mold X-2 Cleaner & Botanical Treatment

For Fogarty's Home Services, mold removal is a two-step process. The first step is our Mold-X2 Cleaner. We simply spray it on to the affected area - normally, the wood in your basement. The cleaner works to eliminate mold and mildew staining on contact - it disappears in less than a minute! After the mold is removed, the crew will then spray on our Mold-X2 Botanical treatment. This is sprayed over the same surfaces, and helps to prevent the mold from growing back. It also smells great!

These solutions combined with removal of moldy insulation and proper basement insulation or crawl space encapsulation can prevent the mold problem from reoccurring and keep the humidity in your basement or crawl space low. If you're in Springfield, MA, Pittsfield, MA, Windsor, CT, Northampton, MA, and the surrounding areas, we can help you!

Snow melting in the late winter and early spring can cause basement flooding for many homes in our area.

For most people in Connecticut and Massachusetts, the transition from winter to spring is a dream come true. But for some people, it can become their worst nightmare. They come home, happy that it's beautiful outside, and find a few inches of water in their basement. This can be devastating. But for homeowners in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties, we have a solution!

The Problem

The biggest problem for homeowners during the winter-spring transition is snow melt. When snow melts, the water doesn't just disappear - it has to go somewhere. Most water eventually soaks into the ground. However, the amount of water is greater than the soil can absorb. In addition, the ground may still be frozen, limiting it even further.

Imagine a sponge in a bowl that is filling with water. Once the sponge is fully saturated, the bowl will begin to have standing water inside it. This creates hydrostatic pressure, which is the weight of that water pushing out in every direction. The water then goes the path of least resistance. The excess water fills the bowl and eventually spills over the top. With water in the ground, that excess water creates those familiar spring puddles. But it's also pressing inward, seeking a means of escape. For a lot of homeowners, the path of least resistance is through their foundation walls and basement floor, and it goes directly into their home. The weight of the water forces moisture through joints, pores, and cracks in the concrete that the homeowner may not even know about.

The Solution

Nobody wants to come home to an emergency situation. For many homeowners, the solution is very simple! A combination of a sump pump and interior perimeter drainage system will help almost all homes with their issues. Water from your basement flows through the drainage system and is routed away from your home. Even if you have an existing sump pump or drainage system, it may not be able to keep up over time. External factors such as changes in the soil and unexpected cracks in the concrete can affect homes, even if they have not had water problems before.

We have a variety of options to make sure that your basement stays dry ALL the time. A comprehensive option is our TripleSafe™ sump pump combined with our WaterGuard® basement drainage system. These systems are powerful and built for the average basement's needs. We can help homeowners in Springfield, MA, Agawam, MA, Northampton, MA, Greenfield, MA, and more to ensure that their homes are protected from water intrusion.

WaterGuard® Drainage Systems

WaterGuard® is an interior drainage system designed to go around the perimeter of your basement, catching water seepage and leaks through walls. It is built to be clog resistant, durable, non-invasive, and practically invisible. Holes in the pipes allow for water to enter the system, and there is a gap at the top to allow for water from the walls to enter. The water then flows to a sump pump so it can be directed away from the home.

TripleSafe™ Sump Pumps

TripleSafe™ sump pumps are amazing. It provides three layers of protection against water in your home. The main pump is a 1/3 horsepower cast-iron Zoeller pump, and can pump up to 2,600 gallons of water an hour. The second pump is a 1/2 horsepower pump that kicks in if the first pump fails, or if it needs more power - up to 6,200 gallons an hour! The third pump is a battery operated backup pump, and it's there for you when your power fails.

Other Late Winter- Early Spring Water Issues

Of course, there are other problems besides snow melt. Any lingering ice dams on your roof from the winter tend to melt away as the weather begins to warm. Ice damming in general can become a water concern, not just in your basement but also your attic and the main living areas of your home. This can contribute to the water entering your basement, and can cause serious damage.

Another consideration is spring rainfall. This rainfall is what often causes homeowners to experience water in their basements. As temperatures begin to warm, and we begin to have spring rainstorms, the ground will become more and more saturated. Flood warnings may be issued by the National Weather Service, and roadways and basements will begin to flood. That's why many homeowners try to waterproof their home and perform annual maintenance on their sump pumps before spring begins.

If you are having a water issue this spring, you are not alone. We are able to help you, whether you are in Amherst, MA, Woronoco, MA, or anywhere in between!

Fogarty's Home Services was able to help this customer with their home! We began in the attic. In order to gain access to the attic and find out what the insulation situation was, we had to cut a scuttle opening. When we entered the attic, we found that there was fiberglass insulation, but there was no air sealing. This explained the issues they were having with drafty and uncomfortable rooms. Once the hole was made, we were able to go in and remove the fiberglass insulation using large bags. This insulation was very dirty, proving that there was air leakage in the home. Once the attic was vacuumed clean, we began by air sealing all cracks and gaps in the attic floor with our Zypfoam™ expanding foam. We then went in to insulate a wall that was next to one of the rooms. We did this by utilizing our SilverGlo™ foam board. SilverGlo™ has graphite infused into the foam -- bumping up the R-Value by 24% over standard EPS foam. Once we were finished with the SilverGlo™, we went back to the attic floor. We were able to utilize our TiteShell™ can light covers to cover (and insulate around) can lights. TiteShell™ keeps the insulation safe from fire hazards like hot light bulbs. The TiteShell™ covers are installed and sealed with expanding spray foam.

When we were in the attic, we also noted that there was a bath fan that was ducting out into the attic. The homeowner wanted to re-duct the bath fan to prevent mold. We were able to re-duct the bath fan out through the gable end wall of the attic, ensuring that the moisture was vented to the outside. After that, we were able to insulate the attic with our TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. We used a large hose to blow the TruSoft™ insulation into the attic, covering the attic floor. TruSoft™ fills all gaps, and covers framing members, preventing thermal bridging. We then added a scuttle cover insulated with our SilverGlo™ foam board. The scuttle cover was additionally weather stripped, preventing air leakage.

We then began to work on the cathedral ceiling. We first went in to air-seal the can lights in the cathedral ceiling. We do this by removing the bulbs and trim rings, then sealing with high temperature caulk to prevent air leakage. We also sealed the gap between the drywall and the can lights. We then replaced the trim, and installed the bulbs again. After that, we went in and began to dense pack the cathedral ceiling. We were able to do this through the attic itself. We inserted a long hose into the space for the cathedral ceiling. Insulation was blown through the hose, "dense packing" the ceiling. This stops air leakage and compresses any existing insulation.

Once we were finished with the attic and cathedral ceiling, we had to go to the basement. The basement had no insulation to remove, so we got right to adding our two-part expanding spray foam. We insulated the rim joist (the perimeter of the floor framing system along the exterior of the house), going down over the sill plate. This seals all of the gaps, preventing outside air from getting into the home.

We were then able to move on to the crawl space. This crawl space was particularly large, and was connected to the basement. We began with removing all of the insulation and debris in the crawl space. We then went in to encapsulate the crawl space. We do this with our SilverGlo™ insulation board. We installed it on the crawl space walls. Additionally, we installed some SilverGlo™ on a crawl space door that was toward the back. This door opened to the space under a three season room. After that, we laid down our dimpled drainage mat to create a thermal break. We then installed our TerraBlock™ floor insulation, and fastened our CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation liner on top of it. We insulated the rim joist as well, and now, the crawl space was done!

We then moved to the space underneath the three-season room. We had previously removed the fiberglass insulation while we were removing it from the crawl space, so we were able to go in immediately and insulate the area with our SilverGlo™ foam board. The SilverGlo™ was installed on the bottom of the floor joists and sealed using ZypFoam™ spray foam.

Our final area of the home was the garage. We began with dense packing the walls with our TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. We drilled 2.56 inch holes into the drywall inside the garage. The fill tube was then inserted both up and down into the wall cavities. This dense packed the wall cavities, ensuring that the insulation was packed tightly to prevent air leaks. To finish out the insulation in the home, we drilled holes in the drywall of the garage ceiling. We dense packed into the ceiling cavities with our TruSoft™ cellulose, using the same techniques as the cathedral ceiling and garage walls. We then replaced the drywall plugs in both the garage ceiling and walls and sealed them with drywall compound in a neutral color, meaning the homeowner will be able to go in and repaint them to match the rest of their home.

Now, this homeowner is much more comfortable in the home! The home is easier to keep temperature controlled -- meaning that they are not losing the heat or air conditioning they paid for. Additionally, he no longer has issues with musty odors and humidity in the crawl space. His home is much more energy efficient and he is looking forward to lower energy bills in the future and a much warmer home next winter!

This homeowner in Windsor, CT called us hoping that we would be able to help him with his home. It was mid-winter, and it was very cold in his house. He especially was having problems heating his den, as well as some rooms over and next to his garage. Due to these issues, he feared that his home was not energy efficient. This home had high, vaulted ceilings, and the homeowner did not believe he had any attic at all. However, he said that he was concerned about air sealing if there was an attic, due to the drafts he was experiencing. He also was experiencing drafts through a large bay window. He additionally stated he would like his crawl space and basement insulated, as they were quite cold. He was also experiencing some musty odors and moisture in the crawl space.

When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived, he noted that while some of the home had vaulted ceilings, there were also small attic spaces. These attic spaces were not accessible, as there was no scuttle. (The scuttle is the entrance hole to the attic.) Since the attic was sealed off, he was not able to tell for certain what the state of the insulation was. However, thermal imaging showed that the insulation was very inefficient and was leaking cold air into the home! When the Home Comfort Specialist went into the garage, he noted that there was very little insulation in the ceiling as well as the walls separating the garage from the rest of the home. This is what was causing the cold drafts coming in to those rooms. After inspecting the garage, our Home Comfort Specialist headed to the basement, where he noted a lack of insulation, and the crawl space, which had a lot of fiberglass insulation. However, the insulation was failing, as it was coming away from the crawl space walls and was very dirty in some areas. He also noted the fact that there were tell-tale signs of a rodent issue, as well as finding signs that racoons had entered the home.

Fogarty's Home Services was prepared to help this homeowner with anything they needed. We needed to design a system to achieve an absolute thermal boundary for this homeowner. In order to try and heal the damage in this attic, we had to take a systematic approach. We first removed everything in the attic - fiberglass batts, loose fiberglass, baffles, and plywood. After that, we re-assessed the attic for mold to ensure no spot was missed during the initial inspection. We then treated the mold. Treatment is a two part process. The first part is our Mold-X2™ Cleaner, which is a non-abrasive cleaner that was sprayed on every effected area. With this cleaner, mold disappears instantly. After that, we applied the second part of the treatment - the Mold-X2™ Botanical treatment. Mold-X2™ Botanical is a plant-based disinfectant that prevents the mold from growing back.

We also helped this homeowner by re-ducting her bath fans, as they were long enough to begin creating condensation (which would put them at a higher risk for mold reoccurring). Therefore, they were ducted out through the roof using insulated FlexDucts with butterfly valves. This ensures that air can go out without coming back in.

After this, we set out re-insulating the attic. We started with air sealing every spot that was missed or poorly done by the previous contractor. We did this utilizing our Zypfoam™ one part spray foam. We added can light covers and sealed around those as well, ensuring that the can lights would be protected from insulation when we added that. Then, we had to build a SuperPlatform™ insulated catwalk. This is built using our SilverGlo™ insulation board and OSB board, creating an insulated catwalk that the homeowner could utilize to reach important parts of the attic. After that, we dense packed the bays that the baffles had been in with our TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. We also insulated the attic's main floor using TruSoft™ cellulose insulation blown in to R-60.

The final issue we tackled for this homeowner was tackling their walk-up attic stairs. These stairs leaked a LOT of their conditioned air out of the living space -- and a lot of unconditioned air into the home! But how do you handle a non-traditional walk-up attic? Well, by customizing a solution, of course! We ended up combining two of our David Lewis Hatch Covers into a custom-built walk-up stair cover to ensure that that space in the attic was insulated.

Now, with the help of Fogarty's Home Services, this home will be much more comfortable, while also being safe from mold!

This homeowner purchased her home in Weatogue, CT last year. This home was a Garrison colonial home from the 50s. Garrison colonials have a roofline that extends down to the other floors, giving a sloped effect. After they purchased the home, they put in a large amount of work, including replacing the roof and re-insulating the attic. This took place using multiple contractors. One contractor removed the original insulation (50s-era balsam wool), and they did a great job of clearing the attic and preparing it. However, the next contractors did not do as great of a job. When replacing the roof, they closed off the ridge vent. However, when insulating the attic, the contractors also blocked off some ventilation with baffles, causing a lack of ventilation. This is an issue -- ventilation is designed to keep the roof deck protected. When we had arrived to the home the only ventilation the attic had were the gable vents. This created a hostile environment. Making matters worse, that previous contractor had only air sealed half of the attic. This raised the positive pressure in the attic.

After all of this happened, this homeowner called Fogarty's Home Services (a/k/a Dr. Energy Saver) so that she could understand what was going on. The owner of Fogarty's Home Services, Brendan Fogarty, personally came to her home to evaluate it. It was evident from the evaluation of the attic that this work had just been completed. During the evaluation, Brendan asked this homeowner a multitude of questions to better understand her thoughts and feelings -- she said that her primary concern was that mold was growing on the plywood base of their brand new roof. The evaluation proved this to be the case. The roof was not protected properly due to the lack of ventilation. The radiant heat cooking the roof shingles and the heat the homeowner paid for leaving the living area that winter caused the relative humidity in the attic to grow to 100% due to the extreme warmth causing vapor. The humidity then caused a large amount of mold. With all of these factors, the attic didn't even have a chance.

Yesterday, November 21, 2023 we continued our participation in two turkey drives. Every year, we help charities in Connecticut and Massachusetts by lending our time, trucks, and manpower to help deliver turkeys before Thanksgiving.

We were able to help bring turkeys from the Connecticut Foodshare to the Life Church in Granby, CT. After that, we were able to help volunteers at the church put together Thanksgiving meals for families in the area.

After we were done at the church, our team traveled up to Pittsfield, MA to help the Western Massachusetts Labor Action. We stocked a truck full of food and delivered it to different residents of Berkshire county who were in need of a meal this holiday season.

FHS attended CN Live 2023, receiving four awards for our excellence and learning valuable tips from dealers all across the country!

On the left is a large rectangle. The top 1/3 of the rectangle is orange, with white lettering that says 'CN'. The other 2/3 of the rectangle is blue, with 'LIVE' on it, with the L and I on top of the V and E. The other part of the installation is a large upside down V shape with a rectangle attached, made to look like a roof. This shape is in orange. " width="640" height="480" />

Fogarty's Home Services recently attended the CN Live 2023 convention, hosted by Contractor Nation on October 6th and 7th, 2023. It was held at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, CT as well as the Contractor Nation campus in Seymour, CT.

The day was kicked off with breakfast with all of the dealers attending. This was followed swiftly by the opening session of the conference. The opening speaker was Larry Janesky, the CEO and founder of Contractor Nation, Dr. Energy Saver, Total Basement Finishing, and more.

Another amazing speaker featured at the convention was David Horsager, who taught the crowd about the necessary steps to build trust in our personal lives, businesses, and communities.

In this general session, Fogarty's was presented with the 2023 Impact Award for our category. This is an amazing achievement -- given to the select few dealers across the country who show a commitment to caring for their communities. With hundreds of dealers nationwide, this is no small feat, and we were honored to be presented with this award for our annual turkey drive.

This session was followed up by several classes, broken into sessions based on topic.

Our Home Comfort Specialist, Mark Rogerson, was a presenter during a class about sales. He was able to speak to the crowd of dealers from across the country who were interested in learning more about what we help homeowners with every day, and how he helps them.

Michael Fraser, our videographer and one of our Marketing Content Specialists, accepted the award on behalf of the marketing team.

The night ended with a large awards banquet hosted by Contractor Nation. Fogarty's Home Services was proud to receive our third and fourth awards of the day during this banquet for being some of the top dealers in the country in our divisions. These divisions are Dr. Energy Saver and Total Basement Finishing, where we are #9 in the country and #10 in the country, respectively.

We were very proud to receive these awards and to be in the top 10 dealers in both of our divisions. We hope to be able to help even more customers this upcoming year!

The second day of the conference was just as great at the first! We headed to Seymour, CT to the Contractor Nation campus to learn more ways to help our homeowners. This day was full of individualized classes and demonstrations to develop skills in each part of the business.

One of the highlights of this day was our foreman, Paul S., was featured in a forum. He was giving tips to foremen and installers across the nation on how he does a great job and helps the homeowners he comes into contact with.

This home required a multi-part solution in order to properly protect it.

The first step we needed to take was removing the moldy fiberglass insulation from the ceiling. As the insulation was across the entire ceiling, this used a lot of manpower and bags. Once bagged, it was taken to our truck, where it would be taken to our dumpsters.

We then applied our Mold-X2 cleaner to the basement. Mold-X2 bubbles white when it comes into contact with mold, and you can literally see the mold disappear before your eyes. After the mold is removed, we go back over it with our Mold-X2 botanical treatment, which prevents the mold from growing back.

After this, we removed the basement door. After ensuring that the framing was secure, we replaced it with a custom exterior door. We also sealed around the framing to ensure there were no air leaks.

We then moved the dryer vent from the window to the rim joist. The "rim joist" is the perimeter of the floor framing system along the exterior of the house. We re-insulated the spot where the dryer vent previously was.

After this, we re-insulated the basement. Where the home previously needed the entire ceiling covered in fiberglass insulation, it now is able to get even better insulation just by spraying our two-part expanding spray foam into the rim joist. This spray foam fills every crack, crevice, and corner to ensure that there is no air leakage.

As a final method of prevention for this homeowner, we installed our SaniDry™ Sedona dehumidifier. The SaniDry™ protects basements and crawlspaces from the mold that comes with high humidity in a home. It is a high performance and energy efficient system made specifically for the sort of environment a basement or crawlspace has.

This homeowner will now not have to worry about mold and water-logged insulation in his home. It will be much more comfortable for years to come!

This homeowner called us initially with problems he was having with his insulation. His home was not staying the correct temperature, and he was told he likely needed new or better insulation. However, when our Home Comfort Specialist arrived at the home, he noticed that there was a huge problem with humidity, moisture, and mold in the basement -- something the homeowner had gotten so used to, he did not even mention it in the initial call!

The homeowner had mold on multiple surfaces, including in his insulation. Unfortunately, fiberglass insulation is "mold food" - mold and pests thrive in it. This moisture logged, moldy insulation also starts to fall out of the ceiling over time due to the extra weight. This caused a vicious cycle where more moisture and bad temperature control were happening, exacerbating the issues the moldy and moist insulation was having.

There was also a very old door that had no insulation or sealing around it. This let a lot of humidity in from the outside, especially in the summer. To top it all off, there was a dryer vent going through a window -- meaning that area wasn't protected either!

Our team helped this customer by installing our TripleSafe™ sump pump system in her basement. After removing a section of sheetrock that was blocking the correct drainage area, we began by jackhammering the spot that the sump pump needed to go in, so that it met the correct requirements to be installed. We then worked on installing the drainage pipes to angle the water away from the home. Once those were installed, we placed the sump pump in the pit, connecting it to the electrical system. This TripleSafe™ sump pump lives up to its name -- it has three separate pumps to protect your home! The first is a 1/3 hp, cast iron Zoeller pump, pumping up to 2,200 gallons per hour. The second is a 1/2 hp AC back-up pump, which pumps up to 3,900 gallons per hour on a separate discharge line. It also includes a back up "UltraSump" pump that is battery operated and pumps up to 12,000 gallons of water! This pump works hard to keep your basement safe and dry.

This homeowner in Wethersfield, CT called us when she was having issues with her basement flooding. Unfortunately for this homeowner, the slope of the lawn meant that there was water pouring directly toward her home -- it simply just seeped through any crack it could! It is so important to have an adequate sump pump in these situations. It is very complicated to get a landscaper to level out the property, and that doesn't fully solve the problem. Proper protection is a must in these situations.

Luckily, Fogarty's Home Services was up to the task! After identifying the best space to put the window, we marked the space for excavation. We used a mini excavator to dig up all of the dirt around the area. We then measured out and marked where the window would ideally go, ensuring that it was in the perfect space in the closet and for the homeowner. We then prepped and cut the foundation so that it would fit the egress window. We then framed the window and installed it. Once we finished that, we were able to install the window well around it. We finished the interior wall with Everlast™ wall panels. Simultaneously, other team members were filling in the space around the window well with dirt and ensuring the cover was on tightly. When it was finished, the homeowner loved the window! The cover was translucent, meaning that the light flowed through it, but nobody could see into the window well. We were proud to be able to make their home safer.

This homeowner had several reasons for needing a window in his basement. For one, he needed an extra way for his family to exit the basement in case of a fire. This was required in order to make that specific room a bedroom, since there must be two modes of egress (exit). He also was concerned with making sure there was enough natural light in the space. Since this is a basement, and the home is not on a hill, there was not an ideal place to put a window. The homeowner also stated that the area around the foundation would likely be very difficult to excavate. Additionally, the wall already had a closet right where the best spot would be.

Luckily, our team at Fogarty's Home Services was ready to jump into action to help this homeowner. We started by removing the old, dirty insulation in the attic. After removal, we marked all places where we identified lighting. We then protected those spots with our TiteShell™ lighting covers. We then sealed all of the air leaks and small gaps using expanding polyurethane foam. We ensured the correct amount of ventilation in the attic with baffles inside each rafter bay. Additionally, we sealed around this customer's metal chimney pipe using metal flashing, fire caulk, and Rock Wool, a completely fireproof insulation material specifically for chimneys. This protects the insulation nearby from getting too hot and ensures that we adhere to the local building code. After this, we were able to insulate this attic using TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. Since TruSoft™ cellulose insulation does not burn, attract pests, or get moldy, it was the perfect choice for this customer's home.

This customer from Holyoke, MA called us due to a large amount of drafts she was experiencing in her home. Our Home Comfort Specialists noted several problems during the evaluation of her home. One large problem that we identified was dirty and insufficient insulation in her attic. This can cause air to come in from outside and causes the conditioned air in your home to escape through unsealed penetrations. This is a very common problem -- most attics are dramatically under-insulated compared to today's standards. However, it can be a big issue for you -- and your energy bill. Your home becomes harder to heat in the winter and keep comfortable year round.

Vents and other air leaks to the outside are sealed, often using our insulated vent covers. Crawl space walls are insulated with SilverGlo™ insulation with a reflective radiant barrier face. Then a dimpled plastic drain-age matting is installed on the floor to create an airspace and thermal break between the CleanSpace and earth. Finally the heavy duty, 20 mil thick CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation liner is installed permanently across the dirt floor - sealed with mechanical fasteners to the walls and spiked to the floor. CleanSpace™ features Ultrafresh™ anti-microbial ingredients in the product. Results - much lower humidity, much warmer floors upstairs, less drafts, more comfortable house, lower fuel and electric bills.

This homeowner called us with concerns regarding the bathroom above her crawlspace being very cold. She was also concerned with high humidity levels in the basement.

Millions of homes were built with vented dirt crawl spaces. Now all building scientists agree - that was a big mistake. Now building codes are changing. In the winter, vents let cold air directly into our home. Floor insulation sags away from the subfloor and the cold air gets above it - rendering the insulation useless. In the summer the vents let warm humid air in which is cooled by the subterranean crawl space. This caused the relative humidity to go way up and condensation to form all over the crawl space surfaces including floor joists and ducts. Mold grows and wood rots, while insect and other pests flourish. Musty odors can be noticed upstairs as mold spores travel upwards into the living space. Eventually rotted floor joist must be replaced and mold must be remediated. An unending stream of water vapor comes up from the ground adding to the moisture load in the crawl space and house. The damp air is harder to heat and cool. Result - condensation, mold, rot, pests and odors, cold floors, drafts, uncomfortable home, higher fuel and electric bills.

Fogarty's Home Services removed the old windows and frames. New Everlast™ basement window inserts were installed and sealed airtight. They feature 2 panes of high performance "Low E" glass, which lets visible light through, but blocks most of the heat flow with a special metallic coating on the inside of both panes of glass. The sash features a vinyl frame - the perfect material for a window in the damp environment near the ground. The vinyl looks great and will never rust, rot, or need paint. And the new efficient windows look great! Results - warmer basement, warmer floors above the basement, less drafts, less condensation in summer, lower overall home air leakage, lower fuel and electric bills.

Some home builders pay little attention to the energy efficiency or looks of basement windows, often choosing the cheapest option available. This leaves homeowners with single pane glass windows with metal frames that let lots of cold air leak into their home. Single pane clear glass lets heat from the home escape by conduction through the cold glass. Metal is highly thermally conductive and a poor material for a window frame. And metal rusts in the damp environment near the ground. Perhaps the worst part is that these basement windows leak air - lots of it, because the house has lower air pressure at the bottom and sucks cold outside air into the home, causing a cold basement and cold floors above. And let's face it, these windows are ugly. Results - cold basement, cold floors upstairs, drafts, higher fuel and electric bills, more condensation in the basement in the summertime, less comfortable home.

To fix this uncomfortable problem, Fogarty's Home Services installed an exclusive "David Lewis Hatch Cover™" (named for the engineer who developed it). This hatch cover rests right over your pull-down stairs. It stops air leakage and insulates over the stairs. Made of lightweight SilverGlo™ foam insulation, you just lift it aside to go up into your attic, and set it back in place when you leave. You don't see anything from the finished area of your home. SilverGlo™ foam insulation has graphite infused into the foam which bumps up the insulation value by 24% over standard EPS foam. It also has a radiant barrier (foil) on the flat lid to reflect heat back in during winter and out in the summer, so the insulation isn't doing all the work by itself. Results - a tighter, more comfortable, less drafty home you'll notice, rooms are easier to heat, and lower energy bills.

Attic hatch pull-down stairs are necessary to access your attic. The problem is that when closed, they leak a LOT of air that you paid to heat from your home to the vented attic where it is lost. All this warm air leaving the top of the house is replaced with cold outside air entering at the lower levels of your home, causing drafts, cold floors and uncomfortable rooms that are hard to heat. In addition to these problems, your pull-down stairs are a big area in your ceiling that is not insulated - and your attic can be 30°F in the winter and a blazing 130°F in the summer! Results - cold, drafty rooms that are hard to heat, high overall home air leakage, and higher energy bills.

The SuperSump® is a well engineered sump system - with all the parts working together. It features a sturdy liner, airtight lid, 1/3 hp cast iron pump which can discharge up to 2,200 gallons per hour, 8 feet high, and a stand to keep the pump out of silt and sediment. A WaterWatch® Alarm System alerts you to pump failure before your basement floor gets wet. Results - A more reliable sump pump, less air leakage from the sump hole, a drier basement, less radon gas and odors, and a much safer and better looking installation!

Sump pump holes are typically open holes in the basement floor with a pump stuck in there. Besides being ugly, the house sucks air up from the hole; air that is cool, and contains moisture, odors, and radon gas. The open sump hole is a safety hazard. If objects fall in, they could clog the pump or switch operation, cause pump failure, and a flood. Results - A more humid basement, greater home air leakage, hazards, and possible floods.

Fogarty's Home Services will conduct the unpleasant task of removing the damaged, soiled insulation in your attic. Batt insulation is bagged and then the attic is vacuumed to remove pieces, parts and dust. Loose fill insulation is vacuumed with a giant vacuum located outside with giant filter bags and a very long, fat hose. Result - Now your attic is clean! It's ready for proper air sealing and installation of clean, new, fresh TruSoft™ cellulose insulation or one of our other Dr. Energy Saver strategies to make your home comfortable and energy efficient.

Attic insulation in your home can get pretty nasty. Over many years it sits there collecting dirt, dust, pollen, bugs, rodent feces (from mice, squirrels, bats, etc.), bird droppings and nests of all kinds of undesirable things. It's possible that old insulation like this can be moved aside for a proper air sealing job that must be done prior to adding enough TruSoft™ blown cellulose insulation to today's standards - but why not remove the old, nasty insulation from your home and start fresh?

First, the space between the wood framing and masonry is flashed with metal and then sealed airtight with special high-temperature fire caulk. Then, completely fireproof "Rock Wool" insulation panels are installed around the chimney so that TruSoft™ cellulose insulation may be blown against the chimney. In some cases, unfaced fiberglass batts may be used instead of Rock Wool panels. "Chimney Wrap" leaves no gaps in the insulation around your chimney, and seals one of the biggest air leaks in your home. Results - Lower house air leakage, less heat loss, home is more comfortable and easier to heat, lower fuel bills.

SilverGlo™ EPS foam insulation board with graphite is installed on the underside of the roof deck. The graphite gives it superior R-value and a foil face on both sides reflects heat out in summer and back in during winter. The roof is still vented, kept cold in winter to prevent ice damming. In summer, excess heat is vented out. No harsh chemicals are sprayed in your home, like spray foam. The attic is now part of the conditioned space in the home, and ducts in the attic are no longer in a hostile environment. The attic is clean, less dusty and suitable for storage. Now the attic can even be finished! Results - the home is less drafty, warmer in winter and cooler in summer, lower energy bills, and less dust.

Vented attics are hostile places (-30°F in the winter and 125°F in the summer). They are very bad places to store things, and the worst place to locate ducts because they are the extreme opposite temperature as the air in the ducts that you paid to heat or cool. The attic floor (your ceilings), allow air from inside the house to leak into attic where it is lost. For each cubic foot of air that leaks out, a cubic foot of air from the outside enters the bottom of the house, making your lower levels cold and drafty. Heat from the house in the attic melts snow on the roof where it refreezes at the eaves causing destructive ice damming. In the summer, the sun heats your roof to 160°F, which radiates to the attic and then to your ceilings and rooms. Results - major heat loss to the attic from the house and ducts in the winter, heat gain in the summer, uncomfortable rooms, more drafts upstairs and downstairs, higher fuel/electric bills.

To our valued customers,

We understand that there is a growing concern in our community about the spread of COVID-19. As we continue to serve our customers, our primary concern as we face the developing situation with COVID-19 is to maintain the safety and wellbeing of our employees and our customers. Throughout this time, we will be increasing our protocols for keeping our customers and our employees safe. They are as follows:

All our vehicles and our offices will be sanitized daily with a hospital grade Antimicrobial.

We have instructed our employees to stay home if they experience any symptoms or are not feeling well at all.

Our Crews will notify homeowners when they arrive on-site for a job but will not shake your hand and will keep the recommended distance from you for your and our safety.

All our Installers will wear Personal Protection Equipment, including Tyvek Suits, Face Masks, and gloves to ensure that they protect themselves and our customers from any possible exposure.

It is important for us to provide safe working conditions for employees and customers. We ask that any customers who are experiencing any symptoms notify our office so that we can reschedule your appointment for a time that you are feeling better and your symptoms have passed.

We will continue to monitor the developing situation with COVID-19 and adjust our business practices as needed. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

We wish you and your family good health and happiness.

Sincerely,
