Insulating Under a Porch in North Adams, MA

These home owners in North Adams Mass had called us out for a couple of reasons. One of the reasons was a problem in their three season porch. In the winter time, the floor in that room was unbearably cold. To fix this we uses our 4" Silverglo underneath the three season porch. Silverglo is a foam board infused with graphite to bump up the R-value by 24%. In addition to the foam board we also air seal in between the Silverglo so no cold air can get into the floor joists and make this room cold. Now these home owners can enjoy there three season room all year round!

Duct Encapsulation in North Granby, CT

This home owner in North Granby, CT called us out to give him a full energy evaluation. While we were going through the home on our inspection, we noticed that he had his HV/AC system in his attic. Though it seems like a good spot to put these large systems, it might be the worst place possible. These systems are in an attic which can have a temperature from 140 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter! When you are trying to get hot air into your home to heat it from this system in the winter, it has to work extremely hard to fight the frigid temperatures to run. Then, the hot air it produces goes into a sheet metal duct that is like a freezer—making the hot air it just made cold by the time it gets into your living space! That is why the system can never stop running making it a very expensive problem. To fix this, we first put our 2 inch Silverglo EPS foam board with a reflective barrier on top of the duct. Then on the sides and the bottom, we sprayed the ducts with 2-part closed cell spray foam. This will help protect the system in the extreme climates it can face. Now that this system is protected, it will not run nearly as much—saving the home owner money and helping his family stay warm!

Important Attic Preparation in Granby, CT

This home owner in Granby, CT called us out because he had a mold problem in his attic. On the inspection of the home the building science specialist saw that the attic was not properly insulated. This was the problem that was causing the mold. It was letting hot air escape into the attic creating condensation.

To stop this from occurring we have to properly insulate the attic. Before we do this, we have to remove all the insulation. The next step is to put up our insulation rulers. This is for the home owner to see that we blew the correct about of cellulose into their attic. Then we flag all the electrical in the attic so its easy for the electrician to find of they every needed to work on the wires upstairs. once we get this done, the attic is ready to be insulated!

Knee Wall Air Sealing and Insulation in Newington, CT

This homeowner in Newington, CT called us out to their home to remove and replace the insulation in their attic. Their attic was full of old, nasty, fiberglass insulation. Pictured is a knee-wall space before and after. We sent our production team out to help these homeowners. First, we removed all of the old fiberglass insulation in the brown paper bag- looking material as pictured. We make sure to vacuum up and any all left over insulation or debris. Now, we install SilverGlo foam insulation board between the ceiling joist bays. On the outside, we air seal with one part spray foam. We also install SilverGlo under the rafters. Thanks to Dr. Energy Saver by Eco Energy Solutions, this space now has a radiant barrier, is fully insulated and air sealed.

Installing a Bath Fan in Bloomfield, CT

This home owner in Bloomfield, CT had a humidity problem in there bathroom due to not having a bathroom fan. By not having a fan, you are letting all that humidity stay in the bathroom with no where for it to go. This eventually will cause mold to grow on the Sheetrock walls and mold is not something you want in your home. To fix this problem, our team installed a high efficiency bath fan. After we installed the fan, we have to duct the vent out the home by running the vent to the Gable side of the home. We then attach it to a proper vent so the humid air can escape. Now the homeowners will not have any more mold in their bathroom!
